Redpath's son exhibits in Hawick
'In a garden and some other places'
a new exhibition by David Michie
David Michie OBE RSA, the son of internationally renowned Borders artist
Anne Redpath is returning to his roots to stage an exhibition in The
Scott Gallery at Hawick Museum to mark his 80th year and to celebrate
his prestigious career.
Born in France in 1928, David is the youngest of three sons born to
painter Anne Redpath RSA and architect James Michie. The family returned
to live in Hawick in 1934. The three brothers attended local schools and
David fondly remembers his Borders childhood, saying that being invited
to exhibit at the Scott Gallery felt like a 'homecoming'.
David was head of the School of Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh
College of Art from 1982 until 1990 and was appointed Emeritus Professor
at Heriot-Watt University in 1991. For services to the arts, he was
awarded an OBE in 1997 and was appointed Honorary Fellow of Edinburgh
College of Art earlier this year.
Executive Member for Culture, Sport and Community Learning, Councillor
Graham Garvie, who officially opened the exhibition on 9 August said: "This is a very special exhibition of work by a very talented
artist who has been a huge success all over the world. Being a former
pupil of Hawick High School, we are delighted that he has agreed to
display his work at Hawick Museum.
"The paintings on display are large in scale and vibrant with colour.
They reflect his love of travel and interest in nature with the theme of
gardens is a particularly favourite subject matter. I am sure it will be
very popular exhibition."
The exhibition is on display from now until 27 September in The Scott
Gallery, Hawick Museum, Wilton Lodge Park, Hawick TD9 7JL
Opening hours are Mon- Fri: 10-12 & 1-5; Sat & Sun: 2-5. Admission is
free and the gallery is wheelchair-accessible.
